Excursions

On Wednesday afternoon, we are offering the following excursions and social events, which are to be booked through the online registration system. The guided tour in Graz costs 10 EUR, all other excursions cost 25 EUR.

The Wine & Oil Country in Southern Styria

Bild The Styrian hills at the southern rim of the alps, bordering on the Pannonian lowlands, support an excellent crop of wine. Another regional specialty is pumpkinseed oil. In order to have a closer look we go by bus to the Silberberg wine school, have a taste of local wine, go for a short walk in the hills, and conclude the excursion with dinner and bus to Graz later in the evening.

Riegersburg

Bild

850 year old Riegersburg castle is an impressive sight situated on the remnants of an exctinct volcano. We travel by bus from Graz to Riegersburg, have a short walk up the hill (if you don't want to, you can use an elevator), and visit the castle. We will proceed to dinner afterwards, and then return to Graz.

We do not plan to visit Zotter's chocolate factory which is situated in the Riegersburg village. If you are interested in buying this somewhat special kind of chocolates, please visit Linzbichler at Franziskanerplatz in Graz (who have the complete collection), or almost any supermarket in Graz.

Bärenschützklamm

bild

For those of adventurous mind who are in a good physical shape, the climb through this narrow gorge is a memorable experience. A bus takes us to Mixnitz at an altitude of 500m, where we walk for one hour and then climb a total 164 ladders. In the late afternoon we end up at the Teichalm plateau at 1100m above sea level to have dinner and return to Graz by bus. Total time of the hike is approximately three and a half hours.

A word of caution: You must not be afraid of heights. The organizers strongly urge you not to attempt the climb if you feel unsure.

Guided Tour in Graz

bild On the one hand, the old part of Graz has been declared a UNESCO world heritage site, on the other hand the city council is proud of modern architecture like the Murinsel which is almost a Klein bottle floating in the river Mur. We have a walk through the old town, cross the river twice, and ascend the hill, finishing the tour at Uhrturm (the clock tower), which is the major landmark in Graz. This tour ends in later afternoon, (very probably) in a café on top of the hill. Everyone is then free for other activities.
