News

23 June 2025: A revised version of the lecture notes has been posted.

Lectures

Formally, there are two separate courses sharing their lectures: Both amount to three hours per week. However, for organizational reasons, the setup is slightly different. The lectures will usually be four hours per week: Mondays from 12:00 to 13:45 and Tuesdays from 14:15 to 16:00 in room AE06 (Steyrergasse 30, ground floor). Some of these lectures, however, will be aimed specifically at mathematics students (e.g., covering some more involved proofs). Students will be informed beforehand when this is the case.

To compensate, there is the additional course of the same name with course number MAT.409UF (“Konversatorium”) that students can enroll in to get credit for the additional fourth hour of lectures. Students of mathematics are strongly encouraged to do so, but students of computer science are welcome to join as well if they are interested. The mark for the oral exam will then count for both the “regular” course and the “Konversatorium”. Please keep this setup in mind, in particular as it does not quite agree with the dates and times shown in TUGonline!

Exams

The exam will be held as an oral. Dates for the exam should be fixed with Stephan Wagner by sending an email to stephan.wagner@tugraz.at.

Exercises

The exercises will take place Thursdays between 8:30 to 10:00 in AE06 (Steyrergasse 30, ground floor). For details see TUGonline. There will be 7 sessions, each of 90 minutes.

Registration for the exercises via TUG online: links for Mathematics and Computer Science.

In case of de-registration: observe deadlines!

Grading of the exercises

Any solved exercise should be marked in the Online checking system.

For each exercise, one of those participants who have marked it is called to share and explain the solution at the blackboard. For this, up to one "bonus point" is awarded. If it becomes apparent that the exercise was not carefully prepared or understood, there may be point deductions.

The following table gives an overview:

blackboard presentation blackboard points
extraordinary or very good presentation of the solution 1 point
correct solution between 0 and 1 point
solution is wrong or the called person is not able to explain the exercise up to 3 minus points and removal of all crosses of the current week
absence of the called person (first time) up to 3 minus points and removal of all crosses of the current week
absence of the called person (second time) negative evaluation
Note that the above rules imply that attendance is mandatory, if exercises were marked in the online system. Only in exceptional cases of illness, participants - after notifying the exercise tutor by email before the exercise class - may send their solution by mail and mark the corresponding exercises. In this case, a medical certificate has to be delivered, and the careful presentation of some of the marked exercises at a later date will be required.

The success quotient is given by:
(number of marked exercises + achieved blackboard points)/ total number of exercises
final mark success quotient
1 ≥90%
2 ≥80%
3 ≥70%
4 ≥60%

Weekly exercises

Below you will find links to the exercises to be prepared for the respective class. Each week an exercise sheet (pdf) is made available online. The solved exercises have to be marked at the latest in the morning before the exercise classes by Thursday 07:30 a.m. in the Online checking system. Participaton is required, later marking is NOT possible!
